Charlottesville-Albemarle County, Virginia Emergency Food Bank

Emergency Food Bank volunteers take requests for food Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM until noon. The food is transported from the storeroom to a distribution site where it is available for pick up between 1:30 and 3:30 PM that same afternoon.

Based on the recommendations of a nutritionist, who is an Emergency Food Bank board member, an appropriate amount of food to prepare balanced meals for at least three days is provided in each order. These foods include canned fruits and vegetables, fresh milk and bread, cereal, canned fish, beans, soup, peanut butter, pasta, bread and margarine. Baby food and formula, as well as certain special foods needed for medical reasons are provided on request. People living on the street or in temporary quarters with no kitchen may request special orders containing ready-to-eat foods and eating utensils.

Any Charlottesville-Albemarle County resident in need of food may call the Emergency Food Bank directly at 979-9180 or be referred by a local social service agency or church.

Special projects include providing nutritious snacks for children in the Albemarle County Bright Stars Program; delivering orders for individual clients to the On Our Own facility; and providing lunch supplies for homeless people who are being sheltered and fed during winter by the PACEM Program.

How to sign up for the program

1) Call to see if you qualify, and get the address of your nearest distribution site.

To see if you qualify for the program call 211, the county social services information hotline. If you qualify for the program, the 211 operator will give you the location of your nearest food distribution site based on your zip code. You can also contact the San Diego Food Bank on 1-866-350-FOOD (3663).

2) Visit the food distribution site and sign up for the program.

Go to your nearest food distribution site. At the site you will be asked to give your name and address; state your household income; and state the number of people living in your household.

DOCUMENTATION IS NOT REQUIRED TO REGISTER FOR THE PROGRAM.

After signing up, you will be entitled to receive a monthly food package from the nearest distribution site within your zip code on the allocated food distribution day every month.

3) Visit your local site if you need emergency food.

If you qualify for the program and need immediate food assistance you can visit an ‘emergency site’ the same day. At the site you will be asked to register for the program and you will be given an emergency food package at the same time.

After you sign up, you will be entitled to receive a food package every month from your nearest distribution site on the allocated food distribution day every month.

Please note, due to federal restrictions, all food distribution sites will only be able to provide emergency food packages to a household, outside of the set monthly distributions, three times per year. Households who have reached their maximum emergency food allocation for the year should contact the San Diego Food Bank on 1-866-350-FOOD (3663)

Bremen Food Bank and Clothing Bank

Statistics show that most Americans are only a few missed paychecks from being homeless and in need. The uncertainty of the economy, job insecurity and increasing gas prices are putting an even greater strain on families already suffering from economic hardship.

For almost 20 years the Bremen Food & Clothing Bank has worked to ease this economic strain by supplying food and clothing assistance to both working and nonworking families.

Texas Food Pantries, Food Banks and Soup Kitchens

For many Americans, there is little extraordinary in having a place to call home and enough food to eat. Yet for tens of millions across the country, including hardworking adults, children and elderly people, such basic needs are not easily met.

As our country grapples in these troubled economic times, we must all take care to remember those less fortunate than ourselves. By donating food, or volunteering time at a local Texas food pantry, food bank or soup kitchen you can help deal a blow to end hunger in the community.

Stockton, California Emergency Food Programs

On-site Food Pantry: Five days a week, the EFB serves from 100 to 250 families at our on-site food pantry. Each family, or single, gets packaged food designed to provide three days healthy meals. Donated food supplies about 90 percent of the food we hand out!

Satellite Pantries (Click Here): The EFB now provides food to 13 satellites all over San Joaquin County, from Lathrop to Escalon to Lodi and throughout Stockton - clients can visit any of the 13, or the main Food Bank pantry at 7 West Scotts, to receive a nutritious three-day supply of packaged food!

"Mobile Farmer's Market" (Click Here): In April of 2007, an EFB van, specially equipped for distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables, and nutrition information and cooking demonstrations, begin to visit selected sites throughout the county to reach under-served areas and offer good nutrition to thousands of families and seniors.  The Mobile Farmer's Market is currently visiting over 45 locations around San Joaquin County.

“Nutrition on the Move" Educational Classes (Click Here): This program has really expanded in recent years. The Emergency Food Bank, with the help of University of California Extension Service food nutritionists, is now presenting weekly classes to families with children five and under. The classes teach families how to plan healthy, nutritional meals from food that the Food Bank gives out each week.

Thirty Non-profit Organizations: Did you know that the Emergency Food Bank supplies food and nutrition supplies (currently at no charge) to over 30 non-profit partner agencies? From St. Mary's Interfaith Community Services, Gospel Center Rescue Mission, the Child Abuse Prevention Council and 27 more - we provide food and nutritional items - over 1.0 million pounds to these groups in 2003!

Healthy Living quarterly newspaper: With the support of more than 10 sister agencies, we began publishing a quarterly features newspaper full of tips on good nutrition, healthy lifestyles, EFB events and happenings and community events several years ago. We anticipate this newsy publication growing into the "best read" in the County to provoke thinking and discussion about how we can all take better care of ourselves and use basic food to make healthy meals for our families! To be added to the mailing list please call EFB at 464-7369.

Health and Nutrition Fairs: In an effort to offer our clients the services of both the Food Bank and those of other agencies that provide nutrition and health services, we have begun having Health and Nutrition Fairs. Our first fairs drew up to 250 families to 15 service providers - and all were happy with the information that so many needy families found.

Job Training for the community: Each day, the EFB operates with as many as 25 community volunteers. Many of our volunteers are here to gain work experience in food handling, warehouse work, truck driving and office administration – and many go on to productive jobs in the community.

To get involved in these programs, call the Emergency Food Bank, (209) 464-7369!

The food is provided to local agencies usually food banks, which in turn, distribute the food to local organizations such as soup kitchens and food pantries that directly serve the public.

What services are offered?

Eligible recipients can benefit from the program through organizations like soup kitchens that provide prepared meals, or they may receive food from pantries that distribute commodities to individuals that may be taken home and prepared for consumption.

How can a local distribution site be located in your area?

San Diego, California Emergency Food Assistance Programs

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP) is a federal program that provides monthly emergency and supplemental food packages to individuals and families who meet the income guidelines (see below) set by the federal government.

The San Diego Food Bank administers the program and distributes USDA provided food to over 69,000 individuals at 91 distribution sites every month throughout San Diego County. Participants on the Emergency Food Assistance Program receive a bag of food once a month at a local distribution site in their area.

HOW TO SIGN UP:

In order to register, applicants can visit an EFAP food distribution site in their area. At the distribution site, applicants must state their household income; give their name and address; and state the number of people living in their household. Documentation is not required to register for the program.

New applicants who qualify for the program and need immediate food assistance can visit an EFAP ‘emergency site,’ sign up to the program and receive an emergency bag of food and at the same time.

After signing up, new participants will be entitled to receive food bags from an EFAP distribution site within their zip code on the allocated food distribution day every month.

Please note, due to federal restrictions, all food distribution sites will only be able to provide emergency food packages to a household, outside of the set monthly distributions, three times per year. Households who have reached their maximum emergency food allocation for the year should contact the SDFB on 1-866-350-FOOD (3663)

Applicants who meet the income guidelines will be accepted into the program and will be given the address of their local distribution site based on their household’s zip code.

To see if you meet the income guidelines, refer to the income chart below:
